Practia for Individual Teachers
The full Practia concept is for whole school improvement. However, if you are a teacher and your school has not adopted Practia, you can still implement it for your individual practice. While it may not have the wide-scale impact of whole school improvement, it still can be a positive for you, your students, and your families. Practia works with the same basic principles for individual teachers.
First, you determine the “essential conditions” in your classroom. This should be done with students and families, and the support of a coach can also be helpful.
Next, determine what data you can collect to measure and track those essential conditions.
The How it Works page gives an example of what this data collection could look like.
- This example could be used by an individual teacher.
If you include “sense of belonging” as an essential condition, then you can use surveys to collect data on how students and families feel about the class
If you include rigorous grade level curriculum and instruction, then you can use:
- Curricular tracking data on which assignments have been taught
- Professional development data on what topics you’ve attended and when
- If relevant, you can include data on collaboration with colleagues
Put all this data together into a single display, which you can use with an instructional coach to determine areas of need. You and your coach can work on these areas and continue to track the data to determine how effective/impactful your coaching is.
Just like with the whole school model, you should use student assessments as a validator of your adult practices improvement. As you improve your “adult practice metrics”, the students should also demonstrate improved performance.
